Amid outrage about Brett Kavanaugh among Democrats and the #MeToo movement it helped spawn and nurture, these same people have been noticeably quiet when it comes to abuse claims made against one of their own: Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, who just happens to be the Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee and who possibly will become Minnesota’s next Attorney General.

Democrats have been demanding that congressional Republicans stop the nomination of U.S. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, because two women have made (as of yet) unsubstantiated claims of sexual assault going back to when Kavanaugh was a teenager. But facts are apparently unimportant to the #MeToo movement. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) has even gone so far as to say that Kavanaugh does not even deserve a presumption of innocence, and that any accusation made against him must be considered truth.

Though when such accusations are made against members of the Democratic Party, these same people are quiet. They have long been quiet about the claims of sexual assault made against the two living lions of the party: Bill Clinton and Al Gore. But they especially have not given any credence to current abuse allegations made against Keith Ellison.

Karen Monahan, who was in a one-year relationship with Ellison, has claimed that he constantly abused her verbally, and at least once abused her physically. This abuse included being dragged by her legs off a bed. What’s more, this happened not when Ellison was a teenager, but when he was a sitting member of the House of Representatives. Additionally, unlike the charges being made against Kavanaugh, there is no question of memories being clouded by both time and alcohol.

Monahan, who is a Democrat herself, has said that she feels abandoned by both her party and movement that was supposedly created to help all women, not just those accusing Republicans. She went on to say that she has provided medical records to substantiate how Ellison abused her, and that — since coming out with her claims — her fellow Democrats have “smeared, threatened, and isolated” her.

Not only has Monahan provided medical evidence of abuse, but a number of her friends and her supervisor at work have said that she told them about the abuse as it was happening. Compare this to those accusing Judge Kavanaugh of abuse, who waited decades to tell anyone about the alleged abuse. They did not even tell their best friends and close family members, including spouses, until years afterward.

While Democratic Party officials both nationally and in Minnesota claim that they are investigating Ellison, even academics are skeptical. Larry Jacobs, who is a professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota, saysthat they are just going through the motions of an investigation, and that nobody should expect anything to come out of it.

Also, Monahan is not the only woman to accuse Ellison of abuse. Amy Alexander, who had been in relationships with Ellison in the 1990s and early 2000s, says that Ellison pushed her around and berated her. There is also a 911 phone record from that time, in which a woman alleges that Ellison was assaulting her. Ellison has even stated that there may be more allegations of abuse to come.

In spite of all this evidence, when the Minnesota Democratic Party held its convention recently, they selected Ellison to be their candidate for Attorney General. He received the support of 82% of its members, and if he is elected in November he will become the state’s highest law officer. Ironically, unlike Kavanaugh — who if confirmed to the Supreme Court would not be directly responsible for enforcing laws — Ellison would be responsible for enforcing the same domestic abuse crimes he is accused of.

Of course, being accused of a crime is not the same as being guilty of one. Ellison may just be innocent, just like Kavanaugh may be innocent. The difference between the two is that Ellison has been at least given the presumption of innocence.
